Most Cape wines have the "South African Wine and Spirit Board" seal of quality guaranteeing the correctness of the information given on the wine bottle. Clues to the wine's quality can be ascertained on the coloured label on the bottleneck which documents the Wine and Spirit Board's inspection.

"Estate" refers to the wine being produced on an officially registered wine estate which means that the wine is made on the estate from grapes grown on the estate.  Bottling may take place elsewhere.

"Origin" certifies that the wine derives 100% from a particular area of origin, the name of which will be on the body label e.g. Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, etc.

"Cultivar" indicates that the wine contains the required legal minimum percentage of the variety on the label, and is characteristic of the variety in the appearance, small and taste.

"Vintage" means that at least 75% of the wine is made from grapes harvested in the year on the label.
