Namaqualand - enjoy colourful carpets of flowers - Cape Town
|
Namaqualand
During spring you can enjoy large and colourful carpets of flowers in this part of South Africa. It is a maze of colours that only lasts for a few weeks and then fades away. Many locals and tourists visit these parts of South Africa during this time to witness this spectacular show of colours. As soon as the first flowers bloom the news spreads all over the country like wildfire. Subsequently, many hotels and guest lodges on the coast of the Northern Cape are booked out and many nature lovers spend their weekends here. Namaqualand is situated in the Northern Cape and is the biggest province with the fewest inhabitants in the country. The Northern Cape borders on Namibia and Botswana. During summer the landscape is dried out from the sun. The Orange River flows from the Augrabies National Park in the region of Upington. There it falls about 80 metres into a mighty granite ravine. Cotton, fruit and wine plantations are supplied with water by this river. The area of the province is 362.000 square km and contains about 900.000 inhabitants. Kimberley is the capital and has 170.000 inhabitants. The biggest attraction of Kimberley is the “Big Hole” where diamonds were mined. Another attraction is the Kgalagadi-Transborder-Park, as well as the Augrabies Waterfalls.
