From Calitzdorp one continues on to Oudtshoorn.

Uniondale is the eastern part of the Klein Karoo. The water mill and the old English fort in remembrance of the Anglo Boer war can be found here.

Central Karoo

The Central Karoo, also known as the Great Karoo, opens from Matjiesfontein, a small picturesque Victorian-style place. Once an elegant health resort, today it is of historical value and is a recently renovated monument.

Laingsburg was severely ruined by floods in 1981, and since then has become famous for this catastrophe. The Old Blockhouse and the Voortrekker Monument are main attractions. The Anysberg Nature Reserve lies in the Klein Swartberg Region and the Anysberg Mountains, where there are many horseriding routes.

Beaufort West is the capital city of the central Karoo and lies in the centre of the world’s biggest Plateau. This area is described as a geographical wonder, and has the highest occurrence of ancient rocks in the world.

The Chris Barnard Museum is dedicated to the pioneering surgeon, Chris Barnard, who was born in Beaufort West. The Karoo National park is north of the city and is home to the black rhino. Beaufort West has many guesthouses and is an ideal stop-over on the road to Johannesburg or Cape Town.
