Northern Cape

The Northern Cape, South Africa’s largest province, lies to the south of the mighty Orange River – which provides the basis for a healthy agriculture. It covers 29,7% of the country with an area of more than 360 000 square kilometres. The capital, Kimberley, home of the Big Hole, is also called the Diamond Capitol of South Africa. The cold Atlantic Ocean forms its western boundary.

In spring the arid semi-desert land is transformed into a spring flower explosion attracting visitors from all over the world. Tourists are also attracted to the Augrabies Falls, whose 19 separate falls cascade over a granite plateau, dropping a total of 191m - a pool 43m deep has been gouged out by the force of the water.

The province has several national and conservation parks. The Kalahari Gemsbok National Park and the Gemsbok National Park in Botswana form Africa’s first transfrontier game park. It is known as the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park and is one of the largest nature conservation areas in Southern Africa. It provides unfenced access to a variety of game between South Africa and Botswana, and has a surface area of more than two million ha.

The last remaining true San (Bushman) people still live in the Kalahari area and the entire area has many San rock engravings.

The Northern Cape is the least populated area in South Africa and has approximately 840 000 people. Predominantly Afrikaans is spoken, but other languages are Setswana, IsiXhosa and English.
