North West
Bordering on Botswana and the Kalahari desert is the North West Province. Tourism attractions are plentiful here including the Hartebeespoort Dam, surrounded by the majesty of the Magaliesberg mountain range, a popular destination for weekend getaways or day trips. All water sports are on offer here – including para–sailing, windsurfing, water and jet skiing.
The Madikwe Game Reserve is found on the Botswana border just three hours’ drive from both Johannesburg and Pretoria. This is one of South Africa’s prime safari destinations and home to 66 large mammal species including the Big Five and approximately 300 resident and migrant bird species. This is one of South Africa’s largest game reserves.
The crater of a long extinct volcano is the setting of the Pilanesberg National Park – a fascinating alkaline complex produced by volcanic eruptions some 1300 million years ago. The Pilanesberg is one of the largest volcanic complexes of its kind in the world. Its’ rare rock types and formations make it a unique geological feature.
The park exists in the “Bushveld” region - the transition zone between the dry Kalahari and wetter Lowveld vegetation. Unique overlaps of mammals, birds and vegetation occur because of this transition zone. The Park ranks among the largest of the national parks in South Africa and covers an area of 55 000 hectare. Today, Pilanesberg National Park is home to virtually every mammal from Southern Africa and is home to the Big Five. Bird watching is excellent with over 300 species recorded.
In the middle of nowhere surrounded by the slopes of the Pilanesberg Mountains, a wonderland rises out of the dust. Shimmering like an unbelievable mirage in the African sun is the fantastic Sun City Resort Complex. Offering entertainment for everyone, this resort is the main tourist attraction in the province and is also known as the Las Vegas of South Africa.
The North West’s capital, Mafikeng, is a vibrant provincial and commercial capital and a major tourism attraction in its own right. The Sterkfontein Caves, now a World Heritage Site, is known as the Cradle of Humankind because of the wealth and significance of the hominid remains found there.
With an area of 116.320 square km, the North-West has huge areas covered by maize and sunflower fields. The land is in part flat and in part hilly. Furthermore, mineral resources like platinum, diamonds, gold, chrome and iron, make up an integral part of the industry in the North-West. |
