Free State
The Free State is situated between the mighty Orange River in the south and Vaal River in the north and borders on the Northern Cape, Eastern Cape, North-West, Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng Province and also shares a border with the Kingdom of Lesotho. It’s mostly a peaceful rural province with farmland, mountains, goldfields and widely dispersed towns. It covers an area of just under 130 000 km² and has a population of 2,8 million – 6,4 % of the national population.
The Free State is the third-largest province in South Africa. However, it has the second- smallest population and the second-lowest population density. The main languages spoken are Sesotho and Afrikaans.
Bloemfontein is the capital of the province. The city has a well-established judicial, institutional and administrative infrastructure. Some of South Africa’s most valued San rock art is found in the Free State. The districts of Bethlehem, Ficksburg, Ladybrand and Wepener have remarkable collections of this art form.
The Free State has its largest rain fall in the summer when it is hot, but it can be very cold in the winter, with heavy frost over most of the province. Snow is often recorded on the eastern mountains, and occasionally over the rest of the region. Temperatures can drop to -9,5°C.
