Limpopo

Previously called the Northern Province, this northern-most province in South Africa stretches along the border to Botswana, Zimbabwe and Mozambique, and has an area of 123.910 square km. The main languages are Pedi (57%) and Tsonga (23%) and the capital is Polokwane.

The scenery can be described as tree-covered grassland. Here you can still experience the legends and stories that speak about the rich history of South Africa. The game viewing is perhaps the best in the country. Spectacular mountain scenery is irresistible to hikers, climbers and mountain-bikers while magical, culturally diverse destinations intrigue both local and international tourists.

These are ancient lands and the evidence of this is the Makapane’s Caves near Mokopane. These caves have yielded some of the oldest and most comprehensive remains of prehistoric human habitation. Also in evidence is the unique history of the Stone Age San. Their culture exists today largely in the form of rock paintings and ancient relics. In the Limpopo province you will find the symbol of the African Baobab tree. The Baobab, found in greatest abundance in the northern section of the province, is also called the “upside-down tree”, uprooted and cast back to the earth by angry gods. The baobabs are a distinctive feature of the province, embracing history, culture and nature.

Then there is the beautiful Waterberg region with its thorny terrain and mountains teeming with wildlife. This is malaria-free and forms part of one of the country’s most popular and well-managed conservation areas. The agriculture includes plantations for cotton, tea, citrus, and other fruits. The majority of the native population is self-sufficient and so provide for themselves. The very important mining industry supplies the province with phosphate, copper, coal and platinum.

Visit Venda, Tzaneen, or the northern part of the Kruger National Park that has a large selection of wild animals including elephants. The Kruger National Park, shouldering the eastern part of the province and the Nylsvlei wetland, is a renowned bird-watchers paradise. These also form indispensable parts of the Limpopo experience. The hot springs of the “ Warm baths” area – now known as Bela Bela – are a favourite and much-loved family holiday destinations.

Limpopo’s capital is Polokwane (previously Pietersburg) and is a direct link with the Mozambique port and on the N1 from Johannesburg to the Zimbabwe border at Beit Bridge making the province the perfect gateway to Southern Africa.
