Currency
The Rand = 100 Cent is South Africa`s legal currency. One South African Rand (ZAR) equals xx Euro. In Lesotho, Namibia, Swaziland and Botswana the Rand is, besides the relevant national currencies a recognised legal tender.
Per person R500, in notes may be taken out of the country, other currencies such as traveller cheques do not fall under any restrictions.
Money exchange & Banks
In South Africa too, travellers cheques are the safest means of payment. Banks as well as American Express and Thomas Cook branches are the best option when exchanging the cheques for cash. Naturally, larger hotels also exchange – however the exchange rate is usually not as good.
The big banks exchange foreign currencies as well as traveller cheques. Branches of such banks are to be found in every bigger town. The same applies to ATMs with Maestro-Function. In the big cities branches of international banks can also be found. Most banks are open during weekdays from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm and on Saturdays from 8:30 am to 11:30 pm. In smaller town banks tend to have a lunch break from 12:45 pm to 14:00 pm. The banks at the international Airports are either open 24 hrs or after international flights.
Credit Cards
International Credit Cards are accepted by most hotels, shops, restaurants, travel agencies etc. Visa, Master Card and American Express are the most common cards in South Africa.
Please note petrol stations do not accept credit cards.
