South Africa is one of the World's most diverse surfing destinations. The West Coast is cold, rugged and unspoilt. The East Coast has a warm tropical perfection.
Cape Town beaches range from beginner beach breaks like Muizenburg to the most advanced big-wave spots like Dungeons in Hout Bay. Starting in the city there are various reef breaks along the rocky Sea Point coast line. From Sea Point along the Peninsula there are beaches under steep cliff faces like Glen Beach, Llandudno and The Hoek. The next bay, Kommetjie, also known as Surfer's Paradise, has world-class big wave spots similar to the Hawaiian North Shore. Further around Cape Point and part of the Cape Point Nature Reserve there are uncrowded super hollow waves.
A 2-hour drive from the city, the West Coast reveals a perfect racing left-hander called Elands Bay. Don't forget to drink a Brandy and Coke at the local one horse saloon, The Hotel Eland.
The East Coast of South Africa home to one of the world's best right-handers, Jeffrey's Bay. If this wave connects properly, one can expect 2 - 5 min rides with multiple barreling sections. If you are one for adventure, a journey to the wild Transkei will just blow your mind with J- Bay's twin called Breezy Point. The Transkei has backpacker lodges and several interesting locals scattered along the jungle coastline.
Further North up the coast is another laid back city, Durban. Known as surf city, it has a larger surfing culture due to the warmer friendlier climate for board sports.

Kite Boarding
Cape Town has been a famous wind surfing destination for years, due to the fact that when the season ends in Maui it starts in South Africa. The boarding riding industry has recently received a further boost with the latest addition, Kite Boarding. Table View is one of the world's best Kite Boarding spots. During the summer the Cape Doctor blows like a fan, producing the most perfect consistent winds. Since a kite is much more sensitive to turbulence and gusty wind, this fan-like quality is exceptional and convinces many boarding fanatics to spend half of their year in South Africa.
The Table View coastline is perfect for downwind runs. It has a stretch of 10km with long waves, perfect for launching or riding. The ride starts of with gentle launch ramps at Kite Beach and ends with powerful shore breaks at Van Riebeeck's strand.
For the more experienced riders the other side of the peninsula offers big wave kiting spots like Sunset Reef and Crayfish Factory. There is a similar downwind run from Scarborough to Kommetjie, also stretching 10km, but with a greater variety of excellent surfing waves, the famous Crayfish Factory half way, 365's and Outer Kom at the end.
As far as adrenaline wind sports are concerned South Africa is most definitely world class, if not the best.
