Cricket No one really knows where cricket originated. One theory is that shepherds played it. One would stand in front of the gate and the other would throw a ball or a stone towards him. He would then hit this ball/stone and run between two marks as often as possible. During the Apartheid era South African cricket was isolated from the rest of the world. When the sanctions were imposed in 1970, South Africa was not exactly seen as a powerhouse in international cricket. They had only ever played against three opponents, namely Australia, England and New Zealand. During this time of isolation (1970 to 1991) South African cricket went from strength to strength. Although they were not able to play international test matches, the provincial teams were improving with time and when the international ban was lifted in 1991, South Africa was recognized as a force to reckon within international cricket. South Africa, together with Australia, is now seen as one of the best cricket-playing nations in the world. |

Rugby The 1995 Rugby World Cup was the first opportunity for South Africa to unite its people with a common goal. This was the first ever event where every South African could be proud of their country. All barriers came down as every South African joined together in spirit. One of the biggest moments in history occurred after the final when Nelson Mandela handed over the Rugby World Cup to the captain, François Pienaar. This was one of the most powerful moments in South African history and was one giant step to unite the people of South Africa. Today, South Africa is ranked as the fifth best nation in the world. |

Soccer The biggest event for South African Soccer will undoubtedly be the Soccer World Cup in 2010. After the controversial decision to hand the 2006 tournament to Germany, an African country will finally host the biggest tournament in the world. "This is for Africa. This is for African renewal," said South African bid chief Irvin Khoza. Now comes the enormous task of preparing South Africa for the thousands that will flock to the country. Stadiums have to be built and the infrastructure and airports need to be upgraded, to name just a few things that have to be done.
