Giraffe - Cape Town Children's Page - South Africa's wildlife wonders

Hello my little friends, I am the one with the looooong neck and my uncle is exactly 6 metres high. I am the giraffe. I can see when I am getting visitors and am much higher than a bus. I am the tallest animal on land but I think there are even longer animals under water.

My neck is very long and my shoulders are about 3 metres off the ground. My faaaavourite food is the leaves off the acacia tree.

Only lions tease me when I am drinking water. I am so long that I have to spread my front legs so that my head can reach the ground. It looks very funny. If you come and visit me you can hang buckets with water into the trees so that I do not have to bend down.

Lions know that I have to bend down like that and often hide. This is very mean of them because I cannot run away when I am in that position. Normally I am not scared of them because my long legs are good weapons.

If you are in South Africa come and visit me. My home is in the Krüger National Park, the Umfolozu Game Reserve, the Mkuzi Game Reserve and the Etoscha Pan in Namibia.  You will be able to see me from far away. I will not hide away and I might show you my black tongue!

I am getting very thirsty; it is very hot in South Africa today. See you soon!!!
