Plants in Cape Town - South Africa

 

South Africa disposes of over 22 000 different plant species of breath taking beauty.  The variety of the scenery often changes after just a few kilometres – whether you are driving through the mediterranean Cape region around Cape Town, the Karoo within the central parts of the country, the grasses of the high lands around Johannesburg and Pretoria or the Kalahari-Dornsavana in the northern parts of the country.

 

The Cape and the Namakwaland regions that in spring transform themselves into a beautiful flower carpet, count to the regions with the most beautiful landscapes.

 

Besides the ever green Rain forests within the Garden Route near Knysna, George and Humansdorp in the southern parts of parts of the country. On the southern side of the Cape range moist forests can also be found. The classic representatives of woods are the National tree, the Yellowwood, the Ironwood, the Kiaat and the Stinkwood.

 

         

In the north of the country you will encounter primeval forests in which White- and “Kameeldoringhout” as well as Acacia grow.

To be kept in mind is that only one percent of the total are of South Africa consists of woods.

 

 

Lily, aloe and europhory species are home in the inland of the country, for example the Karoo or at the south end of the Namib. When it rains in the “Upper Karoo” at Ceres and in the “Small Karoo” a splendour plants unfolds that can only be compared with the botanical garden in Kirstenbosch by Cape Town.     

 

National flower of South Africa is the Protea, which besides the Cape heathlands and the different kinds of thatch are the main representatives of the cape flora.

 

The 3 000 meters long Table Mountain massive alone can show for more than 14 000 plant species, which can partly only be found in this region.
