Name: Equus quagga
Class: Mammal
Category: Hoof animal
Height: 220 cm
Weight: 360 kg
General Information:
Zebras recognise members of their family by analysing the different stripe patterns. The distribution of the stripes on the Chapman's Zebra, for example, can be clearly distinguished from one animal to the next. The stripes, although being visible from a short distance, add to the Zebra's camouflage. This protects it from its archrival, the lion.

Eating habits:
Zebras are exclusively herbivores and only eat grasses and low-lying bushes.
Social behaviour:
Zebras live in groups of up to twenty animals, including one leader. These groups will stay together for years, and if one group-member goes missing, the "family" will search for him until he is found. Another social trait is the way that they treat each other. Every day they will clean each other's coats and make sure that everyone in the family is healthy.
Zebra spotting:
Zebras can be spotted in the Krüger National Park, in the Hluhluwe / Umfolozi Game Reserve or in the Addo Elephant Park.
