Gnus in South Africa - Safari Information - Cape Town Info

Gnus are also knows as Falk Gnus due to their dark stripes along their neck and flanks. They are gregarious animals und live in groups of 20 to 40. The herd generally consists of one bull leading the calves and cows. Bachelor bulls often stray from the herd to search for another herd with the aim of "replacing" the current leader.

During the mating season gnus define their territory which they then defend aggressively against intruders. Once pregnant, the female gnu gives birth after eight and a half months.  A Falk gnu's lifespan can reach up to 20 years.

You can view gnus in the Kruger National Park, Mkuzi Reserve, Etosha Pan and particularly in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park.
