Buffalo in South Africa - Safari Information - Cape Town

The biggest population of buffalo is found in the Kruger National Park with over 15.000 animals roaming around. With a bit of luck, herds of up to 100 animals can be spotted here.

To protect themselves from mosquitoes and other insects, buffalo roll themselves in mud to build up a thick protective layer. Buffalo feed in the mornings and evenings to escape the midday heat.

Male and female animals have horns, however, the horns of the males are much longer. The age of the buffalo can be estimated by the amount of cartilage on its head.

Buffalo are peace-loving animals but can get very aggressive when it comes to  defending themselves. Even an injured buffalo can be a force to reckon with.
