Steve Biko – The freedom fighter of the student organisation – South Africa

Steve Biko - (Stephen Bantu Biko) – The Call to Freedom – South Africa

He was a very important person in South African history and the following lines about him are very sad.
The founder of the South African student organisation died in prison. He was a proponent of peaceful demonstrations and achieved action in the Black Power movement of South Africa, as well as in Black Consciousness.

Steve Biko was banned from his city by the Apartheid government due to his spirited rebellion.

He had to report daily to the local police to ensure that he did not disappear from the area. He was not allowed to visit various government and city institutions or assembly points.

He died during torture with a head injury.

Biko died at the age of 31 on the 12. September 1977 in a cell in Pretoria, after he had previously lost consciousness while being transported naked on the back of a police for 1200 kilometres.

He is one of many black South Africans, who needlessly died because of their belief in freedom.

A bronze statue has been erected in his honour. This took place 25 years after his death. His long-term partner, Mamphela Ramphela is today Director of the World Bank.

Some of his historical statements:

  • The most effective weapon of the oppressor is the brain of the oppressed.
  • Being black is not a matter of pigmentation, but a matter of consciousness.

His personality:

Shortly before his death when his skull was fractured, he wanted to kiss the guard who offered him water!

His goal:

Steve Biko had a huge goal: the reconciliation of both races.

His way of thinking and role model:

Jesus was his role model. Jesus died with the following words:
“Father forgive them, for they know not what they have done. (Luke 23,34)”
