Oliver Tambo - Cape Town - South Africa
The Anti-Apartheid Politician was born on 27th October 1917 in Mbizana in the Eastern Cape. He was one of the founding members of the African National Congress (ANC).
In 1940, Nelson Mandela and Oliver Tambo participated in a student strike at the University of Fort Hare and were expelled from the University because of their participation in the strike.
Two years later, Tambo returned to his former high school in Johannesburg as a Mathematics and Biology teacher.
Oliver Tambo together with Walter Sisulu and Nelson Mandela, was a leading founding member of the ANC and was elected as the first Secretary of the party. In 1948 Oliver Tambo became chairperson of the ANC. In 1955 Walter Sisulu was placed under house arrest and Tambo was then appointed as General Secretary of the ANC. In 1958 he was elected as president of the ANC. In 1959 Oliver Tambo was also placed under house arrest.
Oliver Tambo went into exile overseas to acquire more support against the Apartheid state, since he had no more possibilities in South Africa to fight against the Apartheid regime. He was involved in the formation of the South African United Front, which achieved great success in 1961 when South Africa was excluded from the Commonwealth.
In 1985 Oliver Tambo was re-elected as president of the ANC and continued his work in exile. Only in 1991, he returned to South Africa and took up his position as chairperson of the ANC.
Oliver Tambo became very ill and in 1989 he suffered a stroke, and died after another stroke on 24th April 1993 in South Africa.
Oliver Tambo’s son, Dali Tambo, made positive headlines in South Africa with his show "People of the South". In each show, he meets with various personalities in business and politics.
