Miriam Makeba – The popular civil rights activist and singer from South Africa - Cape Town

Mama Africa – Miriam Makeba
 
Miriam Makeba was born on  4th March 1932 in Prospect near Johannesburg. She is also a qualified nurse. She performed in the South African film “Come back Africa” and was known as a singer. Her strong resistance to the Apartheid regime led to her being sent into exile from South Africa. This resulted in international fame for Makeba. She was supported by Henry Belafonte.

She met the black civil rights activist Stokely Carmichael and married him in 1968. Her second marriage was to the musician Hugh Masekela. During the 80’s she was a special ambassador at the United Nations in Guinea. Her musical comeback was in 1987 at Paul Simon’s Graceland Tour
 
The American author James Hall wrote a book about Miriam Makeba with the following title: “Miriam Makeba - Homeland Blues”.
 
Miriam Makeba currently lives in South Africa and is loved by the population.
