Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi – History of South Africa

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi in South Africa - History

Gandhi was born on 2nd October 1869 in Porbandar, India. Gandhi gathered his political experiences in South Africa. In 1888, he studied Law in London and established himself as a lawyer in 1891 in India. In 1893 he moved to South Africa. He lived in the Natal region. As a person of colour, he was discriminated against in South Africa, which he experienced in restaurants or train rides. On a train ride from Durban to Johannesburg, he was thrown out of the first class section, because of his skin colour. Gandhi had many problems with the politics of Apartheid in South Africa. He founded the Natal Indian Congress. The NIC organised itself quickly in South Africa and showed people of colour how to organise a resistance.

Gandhi was the political representative of the Indian population in South Africa. The South African government monitored Gandhi and the NIC very closely and several arrests followed. Gandhi was arrested on several occasions. His followers called on Gandhi to conduct a passive resistance. Violence was not used at all.

General Jan Smuts negotiated with Gandhi and an agreement was signed, which eased the lives of Indians somewhat in South Africa. A general solution to the race conflict was not yet reached.

In 1914, Gandhi returned to India and was voted in as leader of the national resistance against England. His experiences in South Africa helped him greatly in the fight for freedom in his home country.
His peaceful efforts resulted in success. The British left the country. However, Gandhi could not prevent the division within the country, although he fought strongly against it.
