Northern Cape
The Northern Cape is the largest province in South Africa and borders on the Atlantic ocean in the West, and on two neighboring countries, Botswana and Namibia, in the North. With an area that covers almost 30% of the country (361.830 square km), the Northern Cape is bigger than Germany although it has fewer inhabitants than Köln! 66% of the inhabitants speak Afrikaans and 19% speak Tswana. The capital of the Northern Cape is Kimberley. The province consists mainly of dry land. The Orange River provides some parts of the Northern Cape with water, and surrounding areas use this water for fruit plantations and vineyards. In Springtime the Namakwaland is famous for its flowers and other vegetation. The desert-like Richtersveld National Park is one of the scenic beauties of this province. In the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park one can view a large variety of animals including lion. This park was created towards the end of the 90's, with the joining of the Kalahari Gemsbok Park in South Africa and the Gemsbok National Park in Botswana. The Northern Cape is rich in mineral resources such as diamonds, copper, manganese and porcelain. A few sights to see:
