South Africa is situated in the southern hemisphere and therefore has a different to countries in Europe and the northern hemisphere. The South African winter season is not as cold as winter in Germany or England as the Mediterranean climate of South Africa has far smaller variations between summer and winter than the cool temperate climate of many European countries. Summer in South Africa is mostly hot and dry. It is, however, a pleasant heat due to the dryness. In the summer months, between December and March, the temperature in Cape Town hovers around 30º C, whilst in the Karoo, more to the centre of the country; the temperature hovers around 40º C. In winter, the low pressure together with the northwesterly winds bring rain to Cape Town. This is usually a short season and does not bring a lot of rain. This weather is perfect for the indigenous vegetation and for vineyards. In winter the temperatures seldom drop beneath 5 degrees at night. During the day the temperatures lie between 15 and 20 degrees. The southeasterly wind, which is also known as the "Cape Doctor", is developed far in the southern oceans as a resultant of anti-cyclonic systems. It reaches Cape Town by blowing over False Bay. One arm of the southeaster blows around the east side of the Table Mountain and carries humid air from the ocean and False Bay. This is a beneficial factor for the plants and trees. The southeaster was given the name "Cape Doctor" because of its cleansing capabilities. In summer, the wind is so strong that it literally blows away all the smog and pollution in the air. In 1936, the Cape Doctor blew non-stop for fifteen days, which destroyed many houses and gardens. The cableway to the top of Table Mountain could not be used for more than a week.
