About 30 minutes from Knysna and George is Wilderness. The scenery is beautiful with the Outeniqua Mountains in the background and the Indian Ocean, with its dazzling white beaches, in the foreground. The mountains invite you to hike into the deep forests. A few dams and nature reserves are in the immediate vicinity and are easily accessible. For the gardeners, the following flora can be found in the Wilderness region: Ferns, Milkwood trees, Proteas (National flower) and rare Orchids. You can enjoy stunning views from the “Map of Africa” and “Dolphin’s Point”.
The Kaaimans River, close to Wilderness, is a big challenge for canoeists. Swimming is fairly safe but there are areas with strong currents so please be careful. If a current catches you, do not struggle! It will, in all likelihood, bring you back to a place where you can gain control once more.
