Port Elizabeth - Eastern Cape - South Africa Travel Guide
|
|
Port Elizabeth can thank Sir Rufane Donkin for its name. His wife, Elizabeth, died in 1817 and he named the city after her. He never came to terms with the death of his wife and in 1841 Donkin took his own life. You can visit the lighthouse where a sandstone pyramid was built in commemoration of the Donkins.
