This luxurious region, which is well known by the locals as “Plett”, was founded in 1778 and is only a few kilometers East of Knysna. Plettenberg Bay has always been seen as a holiday resort for the rich, and nowadays it is still seen as an exclusive destination. It was named Bahia Famosa (beautiful bay) by Portuguese sailors. This name was not given without reason – the modern Plettenberg Bay is situated on red sandrock that rises up out of the two rivers and the Indian Ocean that surround “Plett”. The Keurbooms River, the lagoon, and the three white beaches allow for a variety of water sports. In the Winter and the Spring months (July to October) you can watch dolphins and whales from one of the beaches or from a hired boat.
