Plettenberg Bay Accommodation - Award-winning holiday house on the beach for large groups - Garden Route - South Africa Self-Catering
Remote castle on the cliffs of Plettenberg Bay for up to 8 persons - PLE6
This award-winning and much publicized wonderfully eccentric stone castle was built in the 1960s on a wild and dramatic sea cliff. It is situated on one of the most beautiful private properties in South Africa near the Robberg in Plettenberg Bay. It was constructed stone by stone with tumbled rocks from below. The castle overlooks kilometres of private coastline and is surrounded by a nature reserve – ensuring the utmost privacy.
The entire castle is available for the exclusive use of a group of eight guests, but can be increased to ten persons by arrangement. There are four double suites, all with stunning views. It is let on a staffed, self-catering basis, but breakfast is included. Various extra services including full catering is available by arrangement.
The castle is quirky and eccentric. It is decorated in a very casual, very comfortable, very relaxed style. Cushions are laid out every day on the palisaded clifftop terraces, so guests can sunbathe listening to the waves crashing below.
Amenities include a swimming pool, sea rock pools, a flat screen Plasma TV, DVD, VCR and a collection of DVDs and videos. Satellite television, a Bose music system with a collection of CDs, Internet access and a full set of games are available for additional comfort. The kitchen is fully quipped and has a barbecue and wood-fired pizza oven.
Simple, healthy and delicious cooking is provided by the fully trained cook (William). His specialities are fresh fish and seafood served with local vegetables. Herbs and salads are from the vegetable garden and pizza and Portuguese chicken is roasted in the wood fired pizza oven! Another favourite are barbecues done on the outdoor grill. William is also as a specialist in vegetarian and low fat cooking. Guests are welcome to discuss the menus with him and choose their meals of preference. The shopping and the cooking for lunch and dinner is not included in the rental, but is available at an additional charge.
The castle is protected within its private estate, with kilometres of its own coastline. This nature reserve is covered with coastal Fynbos - the Cape's unique floral kingdom. There are six times more varieties of flowering plants in the Fynbos ecosystem than in the entire British Isles! The walking trails on the estate are wonderful with a wide choice ranging from gentle to adventurous.
Whales, dolphins and seals can be spotted in the sea directly beneath the castle's terraces or living room windows. A family of sea otters lives in the dam alongside the castle. Dassies, a type of large rabbit related - strangely enough - to elephants, dart among the rocks. Baboons visit the estate from time to time, but they are shy of humans. The estate is famous for its birds, particularly kestrels, black eagles, brilliantly coloured nectar feeders and common sea birds.
The castle is built above a vast coastal cave which was inhabited by Stone Age man for millennia. There is a collection of fascinating artefacts from the cave in a display cupboard in one of the bedrooms. Access to the coastline below the castle's cliff is through this cave - an adventure in itself. The fishing below the castle is renowned, and gillies are available. William (the cook) will gladly take guests for a walk or fishing.
Plettenberg Bay has many world class attractions apart from its golden beaches and over 300 days of sunshine a year. These include nature trails and reserves; rivers, lagoons and estuaries; the Tsitsikama forest and Outeniqua mountains; bushwalking; whale, seal and dolphin spotting by land or sea; rock, surf or ocean fishing; scuba diving; sailing; water skiing; the highest bungi jump in the world; horse riding; a primate sanctuary; five excellent golf courses; biking; scenic flights; 4X4 trailing; abseiling; and a theatre with a difference!
