The Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens stretch along the eastern slopes of Table Mountain and were founded in 1913 by the botanist Henry Pearson. These gardens are seen as some of the most beautiful gardens in the world. You will be able to enjoy a unique view that includes Table Mountain, False Bay and the Cape Flats.
The gardens, with an area of 36 ha, border on the 492 ha Fynbos region on the slopes of the mountain. The main entrance is found on the side of the southern suburbs. An information centre, a souvenir shop, and a conservatorium (opened daily from 9AM to 5PM) are also at the main entrance.
Apart from the plants planted by Jan van Riebeeck in 1660, indigenous plants find their home in the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens. About 9 000 of South Africa's 22 000 plant types grow in these gardens. There is a scented garden, a “Koppie “(small hill) covered with “Pelargoniums” and a sculpture garden. A part of the garden is used for “Muti” (traditional medicines) and “Sangomas” (traditional healers). A visit is especially recommended during the middle of August and in October. The Sunset Summer Concerts in the Kirstenbosch gardens are a popular attraction for tourists and locals alike. These normally take place on Sundays at 5:30PM. The classical music together with the tranquil environment provides an experience fit for the Gods. The annual New Year’s concert lures thousands of people each year.
