The Wine Region - Franschhoek - Cape Town - South Africa

In October 1687, Simon Van der Stel and 23 pioneers hiked over the mighty Helshoogte mountain into a valley below, which was later to be called Franschhoek valley.

The pioneers set out and established farms of approximately 50 ha each, along the banks of the Berg river. Van der Stel named this valley Drakenstein (dragon rock) after the large estate of the Lords of Mydrecht in Holland.

In the year 1688, 176 french hugenot refugees arrived in the valley, having fled from France due to religious persecution.

The hugenot memorial was erected in 1938 to celebrate their arrival in the valley 250 years previously.

The engraving speaks of their fleeing from France due to religious persecution, the strength of their belief and the role they played, and help they provided, in the development of the area.

Today Franschhoek is a popular tourist destination and offers something for everyone. Nature lovers are able to enjoy the tranquility, peacefulness and relaxed atmosphere of nature.
