False Bay derived its name from sailors who passed the bay, falsely believing to have sailed around the Cape.
False Bay begins at Gordon’s Bay and ends at the Cape. The bay has a width of approximately 41 km and offers scenic beauty for old and young. During the summer months it is possible take a swim at various spots in False Bay. The small town of Strand offers the perfect spot for just that, other sea side resorts such as Muizenberg and Fish Hoek are also advisable. Reasons for the warm water temperatures are the warm Agulhas current and the cold Atlantic Benguela current.
The warm layers of seawater (mixture between the Agulhas and the Benguela currents) are brought to False Bay by the southeast wind. Both sea currents meet and join at the Cape of Good Hope. The exact border between the Atlantic and the Indian Ocean lies however at the actual most southern point of Africa, the village of Cape Agulhas.
The following small towns and attractions belong to False Bay:
-
Strand
-
Gordon’s Bay – Bikini Beach – Roi Els
-
Cape of Good Hope – Cape Point – Nature resort
-
Muizenberg
-
Fish Hoek
-
Simon`s Town – Penguin Beach
Our advise: Book a boat tour from Kalk Bay or Hout Bay to Seal Island. Aside from the seals you will find a big variety of indigenous birds and if you are lucky you could even spot a Great White Shark, which finds plenty of prey in these waters, therefore seldom attacking humans. Seals are simply tastier and represent an easy prey. The South African Navy frequently spot enormous white sharks. Its nickname with the marines is the “U-Boot”.
