Bloubergstrand has an amazing view of Table Bay with Table Mountain in the background. This is probably the most common post-card picture of Cape Town. The name probably originates from the fact that Cape Town and Table Mountain often appear to have a blueish glow when seen from the Blouberg area. It is worth visiting the white beaches and the dunes that are so popular amongst sportspeople and others. The water is unfortunately very cold to swim in and it is mainly surfers and kite-boarders that use the beaches, especially when the wind is blowing. Blouberg is only about 15 km from Cape Town and is easily reached by car. Parking is available directly on the beach and there are plenty of restaurants offering some of the best seafood in South Africa. Directly in front of Blouberg Beach, about 6km from shore, is Robben Island where Nelson Mandela and many other prisoners were held captive.
