The leopard from Hout Bay - Cape Town - South Africa history

At the bottom of Chapman's Peak local artist, Ivan Midford-Barberton, built this bronze statue onto a rock in 1963. The leopard watches over the bay and is found at the edge of Hout Bay in the direction of Chapman's Peak. The leopard reminds us of the times when leopards used the woods around Hout Bay as hunting grounds. In 1930 the last leopard was shot in Hout Bay.

Farmers have reported that they have seen leopards in the Tulbagh and Cederberg Mountains. They say that these leopards are a threat to their livestock and in many cases the leopards are shot. Leopards are very shy animals and do not want to be seen so it is usually only sick or old leopards that will venture close to farms as they can get easy prey there.
