Original: John Day and Son `Plan of Cape Town, Cape of Good Hope.' (London) Day and Son, 1851. Map, 31,5 x 39,5 cm, uncoloured. Scale in furlongs.
A detailed plan of Cape Town in 1851 with forty-three numbered references to places existing at that time in the town and its surroundings. This is an extremely fine print, probably a lithograph, printed by Day and Son, lithographers to the Queen. There is a neatly executed drawing at the top left showing Table Mountain and Table Bay with ships and a rowing boat in the left foreground. The origin or source of this print is unknown, in spite of extensive researches in South Africa and London, but it also appears in a book by A.H. Honikman, Cape Town — City of Good Hope (Howard Timmins, 1966).
